It is a really great look at the level of intensity the team exerted on those mornings. We had all of our individual photos, all of our position and senior photos. What photos I will remember the most are those of my first two friends on the squad. We took a picture of us coming in as freshmen and of course I had to take the picture of me as a senior just to complete the before and after.
Our first full contact scrimmage with refs was today. Since morning meetings the whole stadium was in game mode. We conducted walk-throughs and meetings just as we would before facing an opponent. This scrimmage was the first full contact day we've had in a few days so we were all anxious to throw our bodies around. The scrimmage went well. We saw some good things and bad things on both sides of the ball. My overall assessment is that we are on our way to our goal, but we aren't there yet. We have to use this last few weeks to learn as much as possible. Then I know we can be ready to face anyone. HERE is the live chat play by play of the scrimmage, courtesy of www.kentsportsreport.comHBtheKIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12240771095895927636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7086408318206176247.post-83137385814327978162010-08-09T19:15:00.000-07:002010-08-09T19:15:26.786-07:00Camp Photos

The schedule today, at first, is pretty routine. Wake up bright and early, head to eat at the stadium for a great breakfast, get dressed, and head to watch film with the Linebackers. I have to say that this year is looking good for the KSU linebacker corps. We have returning players with a ton of experience. the new guys seem to be learning the defense very quickly which is good for competition. The starters, as of now, are the same as coming out of camp but there are some players stepping their game up. It was a beautiful day today to start afternoon practice. Speed was emphasized with linebacker drills while also working a lot with tackling. All things we are trying to perfect before we get pads on. 7 on 7 was played pretty well by the Linebackers but there is a lot of room for improvement. There was the first interception of the day by Sam Linebacker, Byron Tyson who took one to the house for the highlight of the practice. All and all the linebackers had a pretty good day. However, if we are going to be a championship team, good isn't what we are looking for. Everyday we are going to work hard to become GREAT. This was the second day of many to become a better linebacker corps and we are going to take advantage of every one. Tomorrow is the first day with pads. Look forward to that article.HBtheKIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12240771095895927636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7086408318206176247.post-6081358100436420772010-08-06T11:03:00.000-07:002010-08-06T11:03:32.885-07:00Camp Day 1: Morning

It's day one... started off with a great breakfast... as if I wasn't excited enough to get this thing kicked off, I get to the locker room and there's brand new carpet and recliners... Special thanks to the new athletic director Joel Nielson... a new environment for a new team and a new attitude... I'm ready to get some new results.. The morning consisted of meetings and discussing the basics... I got to get to know some of the new guys and they seem really focused... Everyone seems ready to put their heart into the season... it starts by finishing out the day and every day as best we can... here are a couple of snapshot of where I will be spending most of my off time during camp...
It's finally here... tomorrow is check-in day to forget Kent State football's official 2010 season... tomorrow marks the day my mind and body will both be pushed to their limits to achieve our team goal... a goal that seems so fragile... we have to put every effort we have in our bodies to keep it from breaking... I hope that this camp pushes me to my limits... it is only then that I can truly improve... I say this to everyone reading so you will not be confused... our goal is to WIN every game... We are not in this business to lose... I've been down that road before... It is not place I want to end my career at. I just got off the phone with my good friend Brian Hummer, one of the hardest working people I know, and he continued to tell me how much extra effort we need to put in to really change things. He is absolutely right. No real change has ever happened without extra work. To change anything you have to do something different than you did before. Thats how I would like to approach this season. Camp is coming up fast and i'm trying not to get too comfortable at home. I've been trying to remind myself daily to do something I've never done before to get better. Coach Martin hit it on the head when he told us to change this football team we have to change everything we do. We as a team need to stay ready, even though we are on vacation, because this is just the CALM before the STORM. Camp is coming soon and we have to take off running.HBtheKIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12240771095895927636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7086408318206176247.post-55851081515340106482010-07-29T11:11:00.000-07:002010-07-29T11:11:13.774-07:00Watch The 2010 MAC Football Preview Live post via www.kentstatesports.com courtesy of: athletics communications department
Their survival depends on their hunting skills. If the wolves are great hunters they will survive (or continue to win in life), if not they will perish (or continue to lose in life). The wolves have a great advantage in that they work as a team and that they are the hunters and not the hunted. They are raised to be HUNTERS. Let me use the life of the wolf as a metaphor to the life of a Kent State football player.
Our new birth was the end of the 2009 football team and the beginning of the 2010 football team. Since winter we have been trained to be HUNTERS and not the HUNTED. That being said our survival in the season depends on how much work we put in on the off-season learning how to HUNT. Like the wolf, how hard we train ourselves will determine whether we win or lose. We have to ask ourselves as players; do we consider ourselves HUNTERS or the HUNTED? Now I will transition the topic to our mentality when facing big teams. In this video there are a pack of wolves hunting a pack of bison. The bison clearly have a size advantage and even a larger group. However, the mentality of the wolves are those of HUNTERS. They trust each other working together as a TEAM. They may chase the bison for miles before they finally have a chance to strike at their weak spot and win. Even when the bison come back to save the calf they still endure until finally, after all of the hard work, they come home with a meal. I hope this year we have enough trust in each other to go into games like Penn State and Boston College as HUNTERS and not the HUNTED. We have to go into these games as a team and play with them until they expose their weak spot and then we will strike! There will be ups and downs in the game but we have to endure until finally we take their hearts. We can learn a lot from the lessons of the wolf or the lessons of the HUNTER.HBtheKIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12240771095895927636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7086408318206176247.post-59265479369754474232010-07-27T10:32:00.000-07:002010-07-27T10:32:37.513-07:00Player Quote: Brian Hummer

As much as I would like it to be, I know this is not a vacation. The season approaches and I can feel it breathing on my neck. We don't have any time to spare in preparation. I've been on the Kent State football team 3, going on 4, years and I can honestly say I've never had a more grueling period of summer workouts. If we can take that same mentality into camp we can be a force to be reckoned with. I know that I can't afford throw away 2 months of training for a week and a half of fun. I'm also confident that my teammates feel the same way. That is what separates the 2010 Kent State football team from any other. We are taking control of what we can do to make this team the best it can be. All of the criticism we face is bringing our teammates closer together. That being said, this week and a half will be spent making myself a better football player. I want to bring something to Kent this year that the students, faculty, and the whole town can be proud of. I want people to be proud to wear a Kent State football shirt. I know it's not going to be easy. But it starts a day at a time.HBtheKIDhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12240771095895927636noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7086408318206176247.post-8922763236830106142010-07-19T13:44:00.000-07:002010-07-19T14:07:16.773-07:00Kent State Football Volunteers for Local Homeless Shelter

Founders or Gennersaret Bob and Mary Dirgo

This past weekend a group of motivated Kent State football players decided to give back to the community by helping a local homeless shelter move from their original building to a newer facility. While working, the players learned about how Gennersaret Homeless Shelter provides services to homeless families who are trying to better their living conditions. Gennersaret was founded in October of 1986. They are an all volunteer, non profit organization who do not receive any government funding and do not pay their staff. Their mission is to provide interim housing, food, training, and support services for those families who are earnestly seeking to improve their lives.
Many players were humbled by the experience and motivated to give more back to the community. Among these players was senior preseason All-American Brian Lainhart who stated, "you never really know how important it is to give back until you've volunteered at a place like this. These people at Gennersaret are truly an inspiration." Going into the 2010 football season, Kent State intends to use opportunities like these to help the team mature into a championship caliber team. "This is our year." says senior Danny Hartman, "experiences like this one helps us realize we need to take full advantage of this time in our lives."
